...growing up in a small village in Kent, the Sinclair ZX81 that his Dad had ordered from a Sunday Colour supplement arrived on his doorstep. After a few weeks Ski had
mastered enough 'Basic' to make it buzz at 2 different frequencies,
and so his journey into electronic music began.
His early fascination with music was encouraged by his first Piano
teacher 'Mrs Abe' with whom he had started lessons the year before
taking Ski to see concerts of Japanese traditional music and giving
him lead parts in school plays, she helped develop his taste for
performance.
Fast forward 11 years, and Ski finds himself trying to juggle a
Computer Science Degree with his commitments to the band he had formed
at school, known as 'The K-Creative'. Heavily influenced by the early
Hip Hop & House of the late 80's, and Funk & Jazz of the 70's, the
band were brought to the attention of Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud
label, who promptly signed them. Ski was forced into making the very
easy decision to leave the world of 'Pascal' & 'Fortran' behind, and
start touring the world.
Maybe due to the fact that they were living together 'Monkees-style'
in the same house, or that they were dropped from Talkin' Loud after a
year, The K-Creative soon went their separate ways. Ski continued his
journey however, playing with bands such as Raw Stylus & Galliano, and
jamming Fender Rhodes at various club nights. Heavily influenced by
keyboard giants such as Herbie Hancock & Joe Zawinal, it was at this
time that he also found his own creative voice, releasing his first
House-influenced 12" on Dr Bob Jones' label, Black On Black.
Ski subsequently went on to become a full time remixer, producer,
writer & keyboard player for artists such as Incognito, Dave Lee,
Valerie Etienne, Two Banks of Four, Rose Smith & Earl Zinger, as well
as releasing 2 solo albums, Life Changes & Rising Son.
In 2007, Ski 's friend and long time collaborator Simon Palmskin asked
him if he'd like to fill in for the mighty Jimpster playing keys with
The Bays.. Slightly intimidated, Ski agreed and to his surprise was
asked back.. his iCal is now full of future Bays' dates.
Ski is currently keeping himself busy running his own label,
Primaudial Records and releasing his own music in the guises of Ski
Oakenfull & Ayota..
... oh yeah, and learning Japanese so he can live there one day which
will probably never happen.
